Speaker Spotlight: Dr Andrew Newell1 August 2018
Dr Andrew Newell will be presenting on ‘Metallurgical test work – between a rock and a hard place’. Read on to see what he’s excited to experience at Millops this year.
What are you looking forward to at Millops this year?
A wide range of things – catching up with colleagues, meeting new talent, discussing and sharing technical work and experiences, learning from presentations and seeing what exhibitors have to offer.
What do you hope delegates will get out of your session?
I hope delegates begin to think more critically and carefully about testwork and how it is conducted in order to get the best outcomes.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the industry?
Getting non-metallurgists – including mining engineers and non-mining professionals such as investors – to recognise and appreciate the importance of metallurgy and the role of metallurgists in projects.
What advice would you give to a professional or graduate starting out in the industry?
Work on developing both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills. While developing your ‘hard’ skills, learn how to successfully interact with people from all levels and positions in the workplace. It is also essential to go to site and get as much experience as possible.
Graduates and young professionals should not only focus on mastering their discipline but also see the ‘bigger’ picture. They should be updated with what other disciplines are doing and how an ‘operation’ works, including off-site activities, such as product logistics and marketing.
